Geothermal Energy Expands in the United Kingdom

Geo thermal usage is beginning in the United Kingdom in a dramatic fashion. By 2012, St. Austell in Cornwall will be producing up to 3 megawatts energy from the earth's movement.  The geo-thermal plant producing this energy will be the first of its kind in Britain.  It, along with the other local wind farms, will be examples of England's new sustainable energy created by the UK based Eden Project.

Energy is produced by positioning a heat exchanger near the surface that will harness the heat in order to drive a turbine.  Around 60 to 70 percent of energy produced at the plant will be sent to the grid to power 5,000 homes. This geothermal power plant is part of the UK's plan to power a third of the country with renewable energy by 2020.
