Green Beauty Tips: How to Choose Eco-Friendly Beauty Products

Green beauty products

Today there are more “green” beauty products on the market than ever before – which is great! It gives us a variety of choices (where there used to be few) while sticking to our environmental guns. But not all green beauty products are created equal. Even if the label says “natural,” “eco-friendly” or even “organic,” there are still a few things you should look for. Here's my quick guide for choosing environmentally friendly beauty products:

- Read the labels!! If you don't know what something is or can't pronounce it, it probably isn't very good for you or the environment.

- Avoid chemical preservatives such as parabens, which are quite toxic for your body. Instead look for a label that says “Paraben Free.” There are plenty of naturally occurring preservatives including vitamin E and other essential oils.

- Aluminum is a no-no. Many antiperspirants contain this metal in order to block your sweat. Some studies have linked antiperspirants containing aluminum with breast cancer. Replace your traditional antiperspirant with a low-chemical deodorant such as Tom's of Maine.

- Petroleum processing is one of the biggest causes of pollution in the world. While many beauty products contain petroleum, most skin experts agree that it can clog your pours, lead to break outs, and cause dry your skin. Alternative products may be a little bit more expensive, but will leave your skin in much better shape and will decrease your carbon footprint.

- Choose plant-based fragrances. Most perfumes and fragranced products contain phtalates, which have been linked to cancer and birth defects. Again, use common sense when reading the ingredient list and look for naturally drevided ingredients.
