Tactics for beginners to choose eco-friendly cleaning products

Eco-friendly products help in protecting the health of the users and safety of the environment. Being green is not just about going to a shop and buying products which are labelled as 'natural', 'green', and Eco-friendly. You should gather more information about them and look at their ingredients before taking a decision to purchase them. Here are some of the tips for beginners to choose Eco-friendly cleaning products.

Check the Ingredients

It is always good to check the ingredients before you buy an Eco-friendly cleaning product. If there is no list of ingredients pasted on the packing on the product, its good to stop purchasing that product. Make sure that the ingredients list doesn't contain any harmful chemicals. Eco-friendly products are generally supposed to be made without any artificial chemicals like Ammonia, Butyl Glycol, Ethylene Glycol, Monobutyl, etc. which might harm both its users and the environment. The absence of an ingredient list is a big risk that shouldn't be taken.

Don't Fall for Labeling Tricks

Don't fall for labeling tricks like attractive pictures, graphics and words printed on labels like 'natural', 'non-toxic', and 'Eco-friendly'. Many products that are presently available in the market claim be more Eco-friendly than they actually are. Decide for yourself whether a product is Eco-friendly or not after doing proper research. If you can't decide for yourself whether a product is safe or not, you can consult appropriate sources like EWG’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning.

Choose Products which are not Petroleum-based

Petroleum-based products are created with oil and can have a damaging effect on the environment. When discharged into the environment, they leave a film on the surface of the water and damage the aquatic habitat. Most household cleaning products are petroleum-based and rely on sources which are non-sustainable. Try to buy products made with vegetable, fruit, nut, or plant oil base which are totally extracted from sustainable sources.

Look for Natural Colors and Scents

Artificial fragrances and colors in most cleaning products can cause irritation, rashes, asthma, migraine, etc. It is good to look for 100 percent organic colors and fragrances in the cleaning products you buy. Natural colors and fragrances are made from natural flowers and fruits and will not cause any harm even to sensitive people.

Look for 'Cold Water Use' and Biodegradable Products

Cleaning products which can be used only with hot water consume more energy. On the other hand, 'cold water use products' will reduce your carbon footprint as you need not heat water to use them. These products are also very easy to use. Before buying a cleaning product, check how quickly and easily it will biodegrade once it enters the waste-water system. Biodegradable products don't cause much damage to the environment.

There are good green alternatives of cleaning products available in the market now. The main challenge is in distinguishing between really Eco-friendly products and those who claim to be greener than what they actually are. The above tips will guide beginners in making healthier and Eco-friendly decisions when buying their cleaning products.
