Toronto Mandates Green Roofs

By a vote of 36-2 the City of Toronto became the first major city in North America to mandate green roofs on almost all new construction.  This new legislation will mandate green roofs on all residential buildings over 6 stories, schools, affordable housing developments, commercial, and industrial buildings. The legislation is slated to take effect on January 31, 2010 for new residential and commercial construction; industrial buildings are not impacted until January 31, 2011.

Green roofs, previously blogged about, are roofs that incorporate vegetation. The reason for building green roofs is numerous; including reduced heating/cooling costs, filtration of carbon dioxide and heavy rain and creation of habitat for urban wildlife.  Though not all convinced of the benefits.  For example,
