A Guide to Beautifying Your Garden Before Spring

Spring gardeningSpring is on its way, finally! We’re all looking forward to longer, sunnier days and time spent out in the garden. The great outdoors is stunning in Spring, with all the plants and flowers coming out of their Winter hiding. However, the colder months can damage your garden and make it look rather uninviting. If that’s the case, we’ve got a whole guide here on making your garden beautiful before Spring gets here.

Start with the basics

It is always best to work from the ground up, when it comes to your garden, so that is exactly where we are going to start. Wind, rain and snow can do some dreadful things to a garden, especially to the soil. If you once had a beautifully green garden and now see nothing but mud, it may be time to lay some turf. You can use a company such as Turf Express to have whole rolls of turf delivered to your door. If you’re not keen on a green garden, then perhaps laying down concrete, paving stones or decking would be best for you. Just remember to leave some space for the greenery.... read more

homemade cheeseCheese begins with milk, as most people know. But vinegar is a key ingredient that really gets the process going. Vinegar is what encourages the milk to curdle and give cheese an acidic flavor. Before vinegar, bacteria was used to produce the acid. Using bacteria is a lengthier process and the cheese continues to increase in flavor as it ages. Some of the most expensive cheeses are still made with acid-producing bacteria instead of vinegar.

This enzyme is derived from calf stomachs, as they have natural enzymes for processing cow milk. But rennet, as well as acid-producing bacteria, is temperature sensitive and requires several steps in processing. Vinegar bypasses several of these steps, leading straight to the cooking step. Harder cheeses also require the time-consuming process of draining, pressing, and drying the cheese, in addition to aging for several months.... read more
