Upcycled Halloween Crafts

We love Halloween in my household and we love crafts.  The best types of crafts are ones where we can upcycle things from our own home.  I've been compiling different ideas from around the internet and I wanted to share them here on Keen For Green.

Keep America Beautiful Presents... "I Want to Be Recycled!"

i want to be recycled

New recycling PSAs have appeared this summer.  This campaign is first in over 40 years from Keep America Beautiful and Ad Council, the creators of the famous 1971  “Crying Indian” anti-littering ad.

The campaign is to help non-avid recyclers become avid recyclers.  According to research released in July by the Ad Council, only 52 percent of Americans say that they are “very” or “extremely” knowledgeable about proper recycling.  Only 38 percent say they are “avid recyclers."  ... read more

Coffee CSA: Review

coffee csaPreviously, I blogged about Coffee CSA.  More recently, my family has had the opportunity to try coffee from CoffeeCSA.org.  And what a fantastic experience it has been!    We received a medium roast from farmer Mario Davalos Bustamante of Peru.  The whole bean coffee arrived fresh via USPS Priority Mail.  The coffee is delicious.  We have also served it to various houseguests and everyone has complimented us on what fine coffee we served.

How does Coffee CSA work?

CoffeeCSA.org lets you sign up for coffee shares from coffee farmers. The organization is 100% owned and controlled by the farmers on their website.  ... read more

Eco-Friendly Wood Watches with a Positive Purpose

sustainable watchesAre you in the market for a new watch?  I recently found out about these neat eco-friendly watches called SpringBreak Wood Watches.  They've got a real unique look to them and the main material for the watch is sustainable, maple wood.

This eco-friendly start-up was created by a recent veteran and recent MBA graduate, who were also fraternity brothers in North Carolina.

Explained co-founder K. Andrews:  "We felt the watch industry was lacking originality and wanted to create a watch that would appeal to self-expressive individuals and watch enthusiasts, with the added benefit of not negatively impacting the environment."... read more

6 Great New Uses for Those Old Tires

upcycling tires

You're an arts-and-crafts-y individual with some old tires laying around the garage. That rubber is pretty—no, really—old.

Why not turn those tires into something fun and functional? An old Nexen tire makes a great planter or swing, and you'll feel good about your repurposing efforts. These simple tips will help you give those old tires a second lease on life:

Pretty Planters

Turn an old tire on its side, fill it with dirt and voilà: It's a planter. Don't like the urban graveyard look? Try painting your homemade planter with bright colors and designs. Make a taller planter by stacking two or more tires on top of each other.... read more

A Greener Backyard

green backyardIt's summertime and we've been spending a lot of time in our backyard.  Especially with a toddler running everywhere, I've been thinking about ways to make our backyard a more eco-friendly place to spend time.  Here are some ideas:

- Use grass sparingly.  We do like to have some grass in our yard as it serves as a nice open playspace for our toddler, but we never use pesticides, we rarely water it (which, depending on your climate, may or may not be appropriate for you), and we mow it with a push mower.  Instead, plant gardens with native flowers and food you can eat.  When planning out your lawn, look into the different types of grass to see which is appropriate for you.

- Look for used backyard supplies.  You can often find great patio sets used (i.e. craigslist and Freecycle) and many of our backyard toys came from my favorite consignment shop: Kid to Kid.   Want something new?  Look for patio furniture made of eco-friendly materials.  ... read more

Homemade Dishwasher Detergent - No Borax

dishwasher detergent recipe w/o boraxWhile I've made homemade cleansers and washing machine detergent in the past, I was wary of making homemade dishwashing detergent.  I envisioned everything coming out dirty or with a sticky residue.    Until recently, that is.  It was a late night (when most stores were closed), we had a ton of dishes to do, and we were taking an early morning flight.

I quickly did some Googling, but all of the recipes called for borax or washing soda, which we didn't have.  I finally found a recipe that called for neither.  I was definitely skeptical, but it wound up working like a charm.  It's cheap, too!

Here's how to do it:... read more
