Parents and teens, you may want to explore a Green academy on the Peninsula, in the San Francisco Bay Area, California.

Woodside High School in Woodside, CA, a public high school in the Sequoia Union High School District, is planning to launch a new Green and Clean program in a new building on its campus.The Green Academy, a state initiative, will focus on green careers, particularly in alternative energy, water conservation, landscaping, and building.

The Green Academy is geared to high school students in the district who want to go to college and need a head start and/or to those who prefer to join the workforce. There will be many opportunities for hands-on learning, including outdoor projects and trips. The new building will be “self-sufficient” and environmentally-conscience demonstration. How to move the public on climate action?

Back to School the Green Way

I never had the typical college experience.  Sure, I lived on campus at two separate universities, but they were both primarily commuter colleges.  My sister, however, had your typical college experience at a university where 98% of freshmen and 50% of all undergrads lived on campus and, therefore, had cafeteria meal plans.  My sister frequently mentioned how appalled she was at the sheer wastefulness of the students.

So, apparently, was Andilee Warner at the Southern Illinios University Carbondale, who was been named "Recycler of the Year" in 2007 by the Illinois Recycling Association.  Warner earned this title because of the vermicomposting project she started with the university's cafeteria waste.

This is a great talk from Michael Hamm, C.S. Mott Professor of Sustainable Food Systems at Michigan State University.  The talks takes place at Micigan's Grand Rapids Community College and is one in a series called The Michigan Economic Development: Opportunities Through Local, Sustainable Agriculture.  A great video for any of those interested in green agriculture.

California has been a longtime proponent of solar energy use, which is a major component of the green movement currently sweeping the United States. A recent report from the Interstate Renewable Energy Council supports this fact. I found this wonderful resource on Youtube provided by the University of California, Los Angeles. UCLA is providing a number of their lecture series online for free public viewing. This great way to enhance your learning or make yourself more competitive in the job market focuses on a number of subjects including envrionmentalism.
