Earth Day 2011: Habitat for Humanity Earth Day Build-a-Thon

Volunteers in East Oakland, California celebrated Earth Day this year by pulling out their hammers and doing some green building. Once a year, Habitat for Humanity of the East Bay holds their “Earth Day Build-a-Thon.” Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization which links low-income families with affordable homeownserhip opportunities.

The 5-day Build-a-Thon is a fundraiser where hundreds of volunteers (about 75-110 people per day!) dust off their hammers and hard hats to build homes for low and very low income individuals in the San Francisco Bay Area. Volunteers are sponsored (much in the way walk-a-thon or bike-a-thon participants are) in order to raise money for Habitat for Humanity of the East Bay.... read more

Deer Hollow Farm, Los Altos - Keen AND Green

In the state of California, it is hard to turn on the news without hearing about more K-12 budget cuts. It is increasingly important that we find ways to continue to place environmental sciences at the forefront of classroom curriculum – after all, today's kindergarteners are tomorrow’s activists, business people, construction workers... you get my point. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Jessica Morgan, director of Deer Hollow Farm, in Los Altos, California.

Green Halloween Celebrations at Local Zoos & Aquariums

Even though Halloween is still over a month away, with the local stores displaying Halloween merchandise since August, it's hard not for me to get into the mindset.  I love autumn, I love candy, and I love spooky stuff.

Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Event in San Francisco THIS Weekend!

Head to Ghirardelli Square this weekend!  It's the Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival on September 11th and 12th.  Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day (which I love) will be there, turning the fountain in Ghirardelli Square into a giant Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day SINK!    Visitors will take a “bubble” out of the sink which will contain a Mrs. Meyer’s sample.   For each bubble that is taken, Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day will donate $2 to San Francisco’s Clean City Coalition!

Dump the Pump Day is TOMORROW! 6/17/10

Tomorrow (June 17, 2010) marks the fifth annual Dump the Pump Day in the United States. Dump the Pump Day encourages people to take public transportation instead of driving their personal vehicles. It's sponsored by the American Public Transportation Authority in partnership with Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and the Sierra Club.

Many different cities are doing different things for Dump the Pump Day. Greater Boston's MBTA is giving away commuter passes, Chicago's RTA is offering prizes, and DC's Metro is having a contest.  Check out your local public transportation's website to see if they have anything going on tomorrow!... read more
