The website has a virtual garden, games, coloring, and quizzes.  You can take a pledge to inspire kids to dig real food and check out some recipes and other food-related resources.  Schools also have the opportunity to get involved.  ... read more

Captain Planet, He's Our Hero!

Who here remembers Captain Planet?  It was a cartoon that aired in the early 90s on TBS about a green-mulleted superhero out to save the planet.  I loved the Captain Planet theme song in particular ("Captain Planet, he's our hero, gonna take pollution down to zero!"), and I had a reusable lunch bag with Captain Planet on it.

Get in touch with your inner 90s kid or grab your own kids and watch Captain Planet together...the episodes are now on the Mother Nature Network!

Did you know that there's also a Captain Planet Foundation?  They offer grants, resources, projects for kids, games, and you can even become a "Planeteer!"  Check it out!   It's a really cute website and for an important cause.  ... read more

Green Baby Must-Haves

As my baby just past the 9 month mark, I've been thinking of the most important green baby items that have gotten me through the last 9 months.  I wanted to share them with you, and hopefully get some more input to help other moms of babies continue to live the green life.

  • Ergo OrganicFirst and foremost, I can't live without my Ergo organic carrier.  Seriously, this is probably the best baby product I bought -- hands down.  The organic variety is 100% organic, and it only runs a little more than the non-organic Ergo carriers.  It supports your back really well.  I can walk miles upon miles with 18 pounds of baby chub cargo without being in any pain.  I like that it's organic, because Isaac tends to chew on the straps, particularly when he teethes.  Plus, the cotton is super soft.  You can get plenty of use out of this carrier, because as your baby gets heavier, it converts to a backpack carrier.   Perfect for shopping, hiking, you name it.  I have absolutely no complaints about this thing!... read more

A Greener Lunch

I try to be as green as possible in my daily life. I compost. I recycle (even though we have to pay for curb-side service in my city). I buy a majority of my food at various farmers markets, and talked my family into joining a CSA this summer. I store my photos online (okay, that may be more laziness than a conscious choice). I buy all natural cleaning products and refuse to use chemicals on my lawn or in my gardens.

On point with this post, though, I have a resuable lunch bag that I bring to work (almost) daily. The thing about lunch bags, though--at least the size I like to carry--is that it doesn't hold much. There's plenty of room for the (reusable) plastic container holding my main course and my fork, but that's about it. If I want to pack some trail mix or some grapes, I usually find myself begrudgingly shoving them into a resealable bag because there's no room for another container. And, although I really want to use those bags more than once, I just end up throwing them away because I don't like mixing the flavor of yesterday's snack with today's.... read more
