Green Company Profile: ChicoBag!

To continue my "ban the bag saga," here is a Company profile on ChicoBag, my personal favorite in the reusable bag sector.

Why its Keen:

ChicoBag has a very inspirational start-up story: "In early 2004, Andy Keller, now ChicoBag™ president, took a trip to his local landfill after spending the day landscaping his backyard. He was horrified by what he saw. Single-use bags were the dominant article at the landfill that day, blanketing the landscape in a thin mix of white and beige plastic. On his way home he began to notice plastic bags everywhere, caught in trees and on fence posts, half drowned in gutter puddles and blowing in the streets like urban tumbleweeds. That day Andy vowed to stop using single-use bags. Inspired, Andy dropped a few bucks on a second hand sewing machine and began sewing what would ultimately become the first ChicoBag™ brand reusable bag."

ChicoBags are totally user-friendly and earth friendly: "We are constantly researching ways to help humanity adopt a healthy reusable bag habit by designing bags that can accommodate every lifestyle. Keep your eye out for new prints and bag designs aimed at achieving this goal."

Why its Green:

ChicoBag up-sizes old plastic bottles in their manufacturing process: "When you see a ChicoBag™ brand reusable bag with the rePETe™ logo, you can be sure of two things. First, the fabric used in the bag production is 100% recycled PET. The term rePETe™ refers to recycled PET. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is the dominant material used in plastic drinking bottle production and can be recycled into a variety of useful materials. Second, many other components used in production (the aluminum carabiner, polyurethane cording, etc.)  are made from recycled sources as well. Every rePETe™ product has a unique recycle symbol printed on the interior of the bag.  The number in the center of the symbol states the exact percentage of recycled content in that bag. We also have a produce line collection made of a hemp/cotton blend. Our remaining bags are made of durable woven polyester."

In addition to using exemplary materials, ChicoBag has innovated the resuable bag - designing it to be unforgettable: "When Andy was designing the first ChicoBag he understood that a reusable bag was only valuable if it was reused.  He knew his challenge was larger than designing any ordinary reusable bag – this reusable bag needed to be designed to be unforgettable so people would not forget it in the trunk of their car or at home. It needed to be small enough to tote in a pocket or purse and have features that allowed it to clip anywhere. After countless hours, fabrics and prototypes the Original ChicoBag™ brand reusable bag, complete with an integrated stuff pouch and attached carabiner, was born. These are now 2 features that you can find in ALL our products."

Extra, Extra!

When asked, "What is ChicoBags doing right now?" they replied "ChicoBag actively supports bag legislation around the country with activist tool kits, education and of course the Bag Monster costume! We host the bag monster blog which keeps communities up to date on the reusable bag movement and Bag Monster whereabouts. Currently we are focusing our efforts to support California Bill AB 1998." We are sure glad to hear there is such a constituency on AB 1998! (Check out the bag monster right behind Assemblywoman Julia Brownley!)
ChicoBag notes that "Cities like San Francisco and Washington D.C. where they have successfully implemented bag bans or fees on single-use plastic bags. In each of these cities plastic bag consumption has been drastically reduced as a result."

ChicoBag is a true green leader and if you are looking to add to your reusable bag collection, getting a few of these bags will make your shopping experience that much more exciting (and Green!)!

I love ChicoBags.  Out of all

I love ChicoBags.  Out of all of the reusable shopping bags I've accumulated over the years, I'm always most likely to remember to actually BRING one of these with me!
