The National Arbor Day Foundation: Trees are TERRIFIC!

Who remembers the 80s PSA for the National Arbor Day Foundation that would pop up during Saturday Morning cartoons with an off-key bird singing "trees are terrific?"

The National Arbor Day Foundation these days started in 1971, with a mission "to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees."

According to their website, over the course of 50 years, one single tree can generate $31,250 of oxygen, provide $62,000 worth of air pollution control, recycle $37,500 worth of water, and control $31,500 worth of soil erosion.

That off-key bird was right...trees really ARE terrific!!

The Arbor Day holiday started in 1872 in Nebraska, and it is now observed on the last Friday in April in the United States. Other countries observe Arbor Day (or National Tree Planting Days) on different days throughout the year.

Currently, the National Arbor Day Foundation is doing great things and running great programs, such as Tree City USA. The program is also sponsored by USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, and it encourages forestry programs in cities across the country. They also run Tree Campus USA, which is to encourage tree planting on college campuses.

Another fantastic program they're running is Rainforest Rescue. You can help save the rainforest through their program, and the even have organic, fair-trade, shade-grown Arbor Day coffee for purchase!

Becoming a member of the National Arbor Day Foundation is a wonderful thing to do, because not only are you supporting an important cause, but you can also get 10 free trees to plant in your yard! Or, if you don't have a place to plant trees, 10 trees will be planted in a forest in need of new growth.

And now, for those feeling nostalgic, I present to you........
