Music Monday - Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology)

We can all use a little fun on Monday, right?  It's time for some #musicmonday action!  There are a lot of great songs about the environment out there, so why don't bring some music into our Mondays and celebrate them?

Today's Music Monday is one of the best motown songs ever:  "Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology)" by the one and only Marvin Gaye.  The whole album has a very socially conscious theme and "Mercy, Mercy Me" is about the environment.

An excerpt:

Mercy, mercy me, mercy
Ah, things ain't what they used to be, no no
Oil wasted on the ocean and upon our seas
Fish full of mercury
Ah, oh mercy, mercy me
Ah, things ain't what they used to be, no no
Radiation underground and in the sky
Animals and birds who live nearby are dying... read more

Fascinating Fact Friday - Robin Williams, the Environment, and FernGully

Today's "Fun Fact Friday" has a bit of a sadness to it, so I've changed it to "Fascinating Fact Friday" - just for today.

As the world mourns the loss of Robin Williams, I began to think about the different roles he played over the years.  My favorite was Mrs. Doubtfire, but another movie I enjoyed as a kid was FernGully: The Last Rainforest.

Fun Fact Friday - Mr. Rogers and an Electric Car

A few years ago, I used to write a weekly post profiling a Keen and Green celebrity every Friday.  It was a fun series to do, but ultimately I ran out of celebrities to cover.  I started to miss having a Friday series to close the week, so today I am starting "Fun Fact Friday."  I'm going to dig up some trivia, interesting information, or a tidbit from history - all related to the environment! - to share with you every Friday.  Enjoy!

Today's fun fact is that Mister Rogers did a number of episodes with a focus on the environment.  Now I want to share this video of Mister Rogers learning about electric cars.  As a kid of the 80s, I watched a lot of PBS and my first exposure to the electric car was from this episode of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.    ... read more

Celebrities Who Try to Build Green

celebrity green housesIn addition to a privileged zip code, the ultimate expression of success may now include a commitment to “building green.”

The smart-celeb- set including Orlando Bloom, Brad Pitt, and Johnny Depp insist on the use of recycled materials and “off the grid” energy solutions. The rich and famous now compete to achieve the coolest eco-friendly environments while addressing major pollutants such as asphalt-shingle waste in roof replacements and grey-water waste.

Green building improvements are rapidly challenging traditional ostentation and decor as a new hallmark of power and prosperity. Home renovation advocates compete to build sustainable mansions for eco-friendly stars with features like living roofs and radiant geo-thermal heating. Eco-friendly values and resource-efficient building methods have come to define design, construction, maintenance, renovation, and deconstruction of new and existing structures. ... read more

The EMA Green Seal: Making Hollywood Green, One Set at a Time

Between the glitz and the glamour, the awards shows and parties, there's no denying that Hollywood is a land of excess and material. Stars are constantly touted for their ever-changing wardrobes and trend-setting ways, but has anyone ever stopped to think about the environmental impact all of that has on our planet?

Thankfully, since 1989, the Environmental Media Association—a non-profit organization devoted to using the power and profile of the entertainment industry to spread ecological, sustainable awareness throughout the world—has and therefore established the EMA Green Seal Award. A program that honors and recognizes notable environmental efforts in the world of production, the award seeks to highlight those making significant changes throughout the industry while simultaneously inspiring others to do the same.... read more

Celebrity Solar: Who's Putting Their Money Where Their Mouth Is (...and who's not...)

Many celebrities hopped on the Prius bandwagon a few years back. But, let's face it: with the type of money many of them are making, celeb environmental efforts should go further than a few gallons of gas per year. 5 Eco-Themed Sesame Street Sketches

Sesame Street was always way ahead of its time.  There are many kids shows today with episodes that have environmental messages, but Sesame Street's been doing this for as long as I can remember.   Jim Henson once said, "I've always been in awe of the incredible beauty of every last bit of nature."  It often showed in his work.

Let's get in touch with our inner child today, and enjoy 5 environmentally themed Sesame Street sketches!... read more
